Overlooking the sea, the three-floor building in the centre of Mola di Bari (Bari, Italy) enjoys a breath-taking view embracing the Angevin Castle and the Bohigas seafront. Completely renovated to a design project by K1 artStudio, architect Stefano Carlone and designer Vincenzo Berlingerio that includes restored bare stonework, the building comprises several apartments and a staircase leading through the three floors to the terrace.
This, with floor and wall tiles from the Ceramica Faetano Terre Garzate collection, is the outstanding feature of the entire building. It evokes the effects of light on the water of the sea that dominates the outward view. The perimeter walls and parapet are clad with blue and white, resembling a swimming-pool. The glossy/matt finish interacts with the light in ways that change at the different times of day. The outdoor furniture is carefully chosen to reinforce and not detract from the decorative impact. The curvy, comfortable lines of the white-painted aluminium chairs and stools add just the touch of designer style the space deserves. The staircase becomes the linking feature throughout the project.
The Faetano Terre Garzate collection evokes raw, primitive matter with gauzy, tangled patterns. This apparently simple texture is an invitation to rediscover the value of “making ceramics”, blending the craft tradition with colours and geometrical forms that suggest the moods of Bauhaus paintings, providing a touch of luxury and refinement. The repeated, overlaid small-size tiles generate rhythm and vibrancy, forming seductive colour combinations and very striking visual effects.
The Terre Garzate collection is intended for use on both walls and floors throughout the home, indoors and outdoors – from bathroom to kitchen and terrace – in a rich assortment of seven shades: Gesso, Cenere, Pepe Nero, Terra, Caffè, Senape and finally Guado, the deep blue inspired by the colour that was such a favourite of Gio Ponti.
The glossy brick tile with intentionally uneven edges is a specific reference to the output of artisan ceramic workshops. In the unusual small 5x20 size, Terre Garzate is even able to clad curved walls and features. The collection is available in two sizes, 5x20 and 20x20, conceived for use in combination to enable even more eye-catching patterns.
