The Škocjan Cultural Centre is a new focal point in the cultural and social life of the municipality of Škocjan (Slovenia) and will house a vast range of artistic, educational and social activities. With its modern architectural design and latest-generation technical equipment, it offers outstanding conditions for a wide variety of events, cultural performances, concerts, exhibitions and literary evenings, educational workshops, seminars, meetings and more, and an excellent location for lectures and corporate events.
The Škocjan Cultural Centre, a nearly zero energy building, went into operation in September 2024 and has a total area of 700 square metres.
Together with Domžale ceramics and bathroom accessories boutique Vistra Butik, architects Bor Ivačič and Tomaž Stražar chose the Ceramica del Conca Boutique floor and wall tile collection for the public part on the ground floor, in the elegant, immaculate 120x120 cm size. The marble-effect flooring in the large 120x120 cm size is inspired by an exquisite variety of marble and has discontinuous veins with random orientation. These stoneware floor tiles create a sophisticate mood in contemporary interiors and underline the elegance of more classical locations. They generate a timeless mood in every room, bestowing great beauty on any architectural project.
The building contains a hall with seating for 260 people, a large foyer where receptions or exhibitions can be held, and a small bar. The municipal library has already been transferred to the upper floor of the Centre, next door to a smaller, 60-seater lecture theatre, where literary evenings have already been arranged. The heart of the Cultural Centre is a spacious multi-purpose hall with excellent acoustics, a modern sound system and theatre lighting, enabling it to host complex cultural events and concerts, although its flexibility means it is still suitable for smaller, more intimate events. The room is intended for both local and visiting artists, and is destined to play a significant part in expanding the region’s cultural horizons.
As well as the central hall, the Cultural Centre also offers smaller rooms for workshops, lectures and small-scale events, enabling it to provide a dynamic, varied programme for all age-groups. The cultural centre will also host local associations, schools and other organisations, offering a location for their creative activities and meetings.
Importantly, a platform has been added for mobility-impaired or disabled people in wheelchairs, to ensure accessibility for all. A large number of new parking spaces have also been provided.
Škocjan Regional Library is an important component of the Centre, further enriching its offering. Its location in the Centre means that apart from traditional library activities, such as lending books, magazines and other materials, it can also organise various cultural and educational events, literary evenings, workshops and meetings with writers and creators.
The opening of Škocjan Cultural Centre is a major step in the project to provide the municipality with a richer cultural life, which thanks to this modern amenity will now be even more accessible and diversified for all residents and visitors.
It’s the largest project in the municipality’s 30-year history, so the opening ceremony was attended by Culture Minister Asta Vrečko and many other guests, from the mayors of neighbouring municipalities through, naturally, to local townspeople, several hundred of whom gathered outside the new temple of culture in the middle of the municipality where the event took place.
